With superb colour quality, true 3.1 megapixel digital still images, Leica Dicomar lens with Low Dispersion glass and optical image stabiliser, you get clear, sharp images even when taking wide-angle shots or using the zoom at high magnification levels.The NV-GS250 has lots of features designed to appeal to beginners and more experienced users alike. To begin with, it has the full range of inputs and outputs - DV in/out, AV in/out (including S-Video) and USB 2.0 for transferring still images (to and from the SD card) and compressed movies to a PC or Mac. It has a comprehensive range of manual and auto controls, for which the master switch is set into the LCD screen recess. It's easy to switch to Manual Focus, for instance, simply by flipping the switch down. Very nice. Full manual control over White Balance, Exposure and electronic Shutter Speed is also provided, and requires use of the Joystick control to select and adjust (potentially tricky when recording). It's also possible to make adjustments to Black Balance as well as White Balance - another opportunity to determine the optimum image quality. Widescreen 16:9 is of the anamorphic type, and when footage is played into a suitable video editing program on PC and Mac, the 16:9 tags are automatically detected for correct aspect ratio display (our sample was tested with Pinnacle Studio 9 Plus for Windows). Other welcome features include Optical Image Stabilisation - which seems to work well on the ends of optical zoom - Backlight compensation and an end-of-last-take recording search utility. Six Program AE settings provide Sports, Portrait, Low Light, Spotlight and Surf/Snow white balance presets, in addition to a built-in Flashlight for use with the digital stills side of things. Making use of the NV-GS250's Mic input facility is a handy combined remote control stick which combines as a lavalier microphone - useful for recording simple interviews or commentaries whilst also having ther ability to start and stop the camcorder. In addition to the camcorder's 10:1 (10x) optical zoom ratio, the camcorder also offers a respectable 20:1 (20x) digital zoom as well as a near useless 500:1 digital zoom. What is this thing that manufacturers have about high-ratio digi zooms?
